International Day of indigenous peoples of the world
9 August each year the world celebrates the Day of indigenous peoples of the world. This idea appeared in 1994 after the UN General Assembly proclaimed 1993 the international year of indigenous peoples of the world.
The beginning of the international decade of indigenous peoples of the world have identified 10 December 1994.
Already in 1995 identified the objectives of this decade. It was planned to establish a number of measures aimed at improving the well-being of indigenous peoples of the world. It was supposed to disseminate information about their culture, the creation of the UN forum for indigenous peoples.
Planned adoption of the UN Declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples and the subsequent development of international standards in the field of protection of human rights of indigenous peoples.
The assessment was conducted according to the indicators of the living standard of indigenous peoples.
The idea was to strengthen international cooperation with indigenous peoples.
22 December 2003 to support the decade were involved governments.
Started to establish national committees with the participation of indigenous peoples. It provided directly involved themselves in the activities of this decade.
